Southern Alberta Bible Camp,Lomond, Alberta |
Southern Alberta Bible Camp (SABC) is located on the shores of the Travers Reservoir only a few kilometers from Little Bow Provincial Park. From 1981 to 2010 SABC served up to 1700 campers per season out of its lodge facility which began construction in 1979. Since 1993 SABC’s facilities have been augmented with the development of a Frontier Village, and since 1994 with teepee facilities. During the off-season SABC is booked most weekends with rental groups. In 2009, due to inadequate capacity to accommodate demand, Alvin Reinhard Fritz Architect Inc. (ARFAI) was engaged to develop plans for expansion at SABC. ARFAI prepared a preliminary schematic design that demonstrated how SABC could be expanded while keeping the original lodge facility available throughout the construction process. This allowed SABC to maintain its vital ministry as the project was developed and constructed. The architectural form and character for the project is based on Prairie Architecture featuring an open heavy timber truss structure finished in rock, cementitious siding and exterior grade heavy timber. This aesthetic solution was selected to provide an appropriate Canadian Prairie Architecture design that is optimal for a prairie lake setting. The Executive Director at SABC is Jon Gartly, who, with his wife Melissa, has been actively involved with SABC since 1990. Jon, in conjunction with the building committee for SABC, collaborated closely with ARFAI to provide a comprehensive functional program which ARFAI used to create the project design. This collaboration resulted in a project which is more than any single entity could have conceived. ARFAI is proud to have contributed professional services for this exciting and meaningful project. |
Camp Caroline,Caroline, Alberta |
Camp Caroline is located in the beautiful foothills of the Canadian Rockies, 6.5 km south of the town of Caroline, on 320 acres of beautiful woodlands. Camp Caroline is owned and operated by the Alberta Baptist Association (ABA). The strong supportive relationships that exist between Camp Caroline and the churches of the ABA allow for sharing resources and a strong team effort to accomplish Kingdom purposes. The facilities include an indoor pool & hot tub, meeting rooms, games room, gymnasium, sports fields, volleyball courts, over 8km of hiking trails, and two modern lodges which comfortably accommodate up to 228 people. The facility is rented out to a variety of groups from September to mid-June and is well suited to accommodate school band groups, family reunions, craft workshops, and various church retreats. The Camp offers a picturesque setting, wholesome atmosphere, and an overall first rate retreat environment. Alvin Reinhard Fritz Architect Inc. (ARFAI) has been involved in the design of Camp Caroline for many years. Construction and development on the site proceeded on the basis of a Master Plan which was developed by ARFAI in collaboration with Jim Crozier and the Camp Board and Building Committee. One of the first projects developed in the context of this Master Plan was a central Chapel which provides a central focus for the camp and draws all who visit to their spiritual roots. The second phase of development towards the implementation of the master plan was construction of a regulation size gymnasium designed to preserve the opportunity for sports camps. The most recent phase of development was a housing wing which provides much-needed accommodation for guests at Camp Caroline. Alvin Reinhard Fritz Architect Inc. is privileged to have been able to provide collaborative design services for this exciting environment. |
Eagles Nest Ranch,Elkwater, Alberta |
Eagles Nest Ranch is a summer camp and year round retreat centre which offers various activities designed to provide challenges and excitement. Alvin Fritz has been involved with Eagles Nest Ranch since its inception and was able to input on the overall design and philosophical approach to the project from the beginning. Eagles Nest Ranch is located in the beautiful and picturesque Cypress Hills, which are historically known by “First Nations” as the weather breeding grounds. The Cypress Hills are geographically unique and harbor flora and fauna species which are not present again in North America until latitudes in California. The layout of the Ranch follows the original Master Plan created by ARFAI with clusters of cabins providing housing for campers, couples retreats, and staff as the need arises. A central lodge provides a central gathering spot for campers and staff alike, and provides central washroom facilities, a substantive kitchen, outdoor swimming pool, and large hot tub environment. The “Old West” architectural form and character of the Ranch is Canadiana combined with a rustic mining motif. This aesthetic is beyond “Cowboy Western” which makes the Ranch memorable for its interest and intrigue. The mission at Eagles Nest Ranch is to meet the emotional, physical, and spiritual needs of campers and visitors. The Ranch uses exciting and creative methods to give campers the opportunity to meet with Jesus and experience the three C’s of camping- Care, Community and Challenge. The staff at Eagle’s Nest Ranch model the core values of Excellence, Nurture and Righteousness. |
Best Western Inn Complex,Medicine Hat, Alberta |
One of Al’s first assignments was the design of the residence of Bob Henderson who also owned the Best Western Inn Complex in Medicine Hat. Bob was an astute hotelier who constantly upgrades his facilities, and as such it was a great pleasure to collaborate with a visionary operator with a penchant for excellence. The first assignment was a renovation of the racquetball courts into suites. The racquetball courts had been constructed on the east side of the complex and as such provided a gateway environment. The new windows and door systems accommodating the new suites provided the warmth and inviting environment contributing to the success of the Best Western Inn. An older 1950’s construction with a near flat roof was also ready for an upgrade and Alvin produced a concept of loft suites, which dramatically altered the design. The loft for each suite was accessed from the main floor with an internal staircase providing a renewed & exciting aesthetic - making them sought after by long-standing guests. The new pitched roofs finished in concrete tile brought this expression to the exterior, adding a new dynamic & again contributing to attracting clientele to the inn. Ultimately, the lobby needed to be brought to the same standards as these exciting new additions & the Palladian window adjacent to the Port Cochere provided a cohesive and exciting lobby environment. The sensitivity of the expansion elements are such that they do not appear to be an addition, but part of a unified whole. |
Heritage Inn & Suites,Brooks, Alberta |
The Heritage Inn & Suites is a beautiful and fully appointed hotel ideally located in Brooks, Alberta just six blocks south of the Trans-Canada Highway, near hunting, fishing, and golfing activities. It features Director & Executive suites, 52 Deluxe Standard rooms, and 6 Junior suites that feature Jacuzzi tubs, fireplaces, and separate bedrooms. Amenities include a dining café, 60 seat meeting room, a well-appointed swimming pool, hot tub, sauna, and fitness area. Alvin Reinhard Fritz Architect Inc. was introduced to the Kanegawa family, owners of the Heritage Inn & Suites, by Alvin Dueck, owner of Braman Furniture, an international furniture supplier to the hospitality industry. The stakeholders utilized a successful design/build process in collaboration with Silver Ridge Construction and the architect. A very deep, but narrow lot dictated a linear design – conditions that ARFAI accepted as a good design challenge. The project resulted in a very cost effective, yet attractive hotel building constructed in record time just prior to an inflationary construction boom. |
